EXIF Photo Archive Template
Organize your photos using embedded EXIF metadata. Automatically extract camera model, capture date, focal length, and GPS location to create detailed, searchable filenames.

EXIF Data Availability. EXIF data is typically available in photos from digital cameras and smartphones. Some image editors may strip EXIF data when saving. If EXIF data is not available, FilesDesk will use fallback values or skip those fields.
Supported EXIF Fields
| EXIF field | What it holds | Example |
|---|---|---|
| DateTimeOriginal | The exact date and time when the photo was captured. More accurate than file modification date. | 2024:06:15 14:32:45 |
| Make & Model | Camera manufacturer and model name. Useful for multi-camera workflows. | Canon EOS R5 |
| FocalLength | The focal length of the lens used. Great for organizing by lens or shooting style. | 85mm |
| GPSLatitude/Longitude | Geographic coordinates where the photo was taken. Can be converted to place names. | 40.7128, -74.0060 |
| ISO Speed | The ISO sensitivity setting used. Useful for identifying low-light shots. | ISO 800 |
| Aperture | The f-stop value used. Can help identify portrait vs landscape shots. | f/1.8 |
How It Works
- 1
Extract camera model from EXIF metadata
FilesDesk reads the Make and Model tags from your photo's embedded EXIF data.
- 2
Use DateTimeOriginal from EXIF for the date
The actual capture date is extracted, not the file's modified date, ensuring accuracy.
- 3
Extract focal length from EXIF data
The lens focal length is read and formatted (e.g., 85mm, 24mm, 200mm).
- 4
Include GPS location if available
When photos have GPS coordinates, they can be converted to readable location names.

Transformations Applied
| Transform | What it does |
|---|---|
| Lowercase | Camera model is converted to lowercase (e.g., "Canon EOS R5" becomes "canon-eos-r5") |
| Replace Spaces with Hyphens | Spaces in camera model names are replaced with hyphens for clean filenames |
| Underscore Separator | Uses underscores (_) between major fields for clear visual separation |
Who Is This For?
| Who | How they use it |
|---|---|
| Professional Photographers | Track gear usage and organize by camera body |
| Lens Collectors | Organize photos by focal length and lens used |
| Travel Photographers | Include location data in filenames |
| Photo Archivists | Create detailed, searchable archives |
