How to bulk rename files online

  1. Drop your files in. Up to 200 files at once. Any file type — photos, PDFs, audio, documents.
  2. Set your rules. Find & replace, prefix, suffix, sequential numbering, case change, regex — combine as many as you need. The preview updates live.
  3. Download the ZIP. Renamed copies are bundled into a single ZIP file. Your originals are untouched.

What can you do with a bulk file renamer?

Pattern-based bulk renaming covers most everyday tasks. Here are the most common ones, with the exact rules you'd use:

Rename a folder of photos

IMG_4521.JPG, IMG_4522.JPG, IMG_4523.JPG

Beach_001.jpg, Beach_002.jpg, Beach_003.jpg

Find IMG_ → Replace Beach_ · Sequential number from 1 · Lowercase

Add a date to receipts

receipt.pdf, receipt (1).pdf

2026-04-30_receipt.pdf, 2026-04-30_receipt_1.pdf

Add today's date as prefix · Sanitize

Clean up screenshot clutter

screenshot_2026-04-30_at_10_42.png

Sanitize · Lowercase

Regex magic

track-01-song-name.mp3

01 - song name.mp3

Pattern ^track-(\d+)-(.+)$ · Replace $1 - $2

Why bulk rename files at all?

Filenames are how your future self — and search tools — find anything. A folder of DSC_0001.JPG through DSC_3204.JPG tells you nothing. Renaming them to something descriptive makes them searchable, sortable and shareable.

1

Searchability

Spotlight, Windows Search, Google Drive and every cloud sync tool index filenames. Wedding_Sarah_001.jpg finds itself; IMG_4521.jpg doesn't.

2

Sort order that makes sense

Sequential numbering with zero-padding (001, 002) keeps files in the right order alphabetically. Without padding, 10 sorts before 2.

3

Cross-platform safety

Spaces, ?, :, * and other special characters break URLs, FTP transfers and Windows paths. Sanitizing removes the trip-wires.

4

Faster handoff

Photographers, designers, accountants and lawyers all hand work to clients. A folder named Acme-Invoice-2026-04.pdf, Acme-Invoice-2026-05.pdf… looks far more professional than doc1.pdf, doc2.pdf.

Pattern-based vs AI-based renaming

This free tool is pattern-based: it follows the rules you set. That's perfect when files already share a structure. But what if your filenames are random and the useful information is inside the file?

Pattern-based (free)

  • Looks at the existing filename only
  • Find & replace, prefix, regex, numbering
  • Deterministic — same input, same output
  • Free, instant, no AI cost
  • Best when files share a clear pattern

AI-based (FilesDesk)

  • Reads the actual content of each file
  • Vision models describe what's in a photo
  • OCR pulls text out of PDFs & receipts
  • EXIF, dates, GPS used as context
  • Best when filenames are random and content is the only clue

Frequently asked questions

Is the bulk file renamer really free?

Yes, completely free, no signup, no watermarks. Use it as often as you like.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Everything runs as JavaScript in your browser. The renamed ZIP is generated locally on your device. The same privacy approach as the FilesDesk desktop app.

How many files can I rename at once?

The free browser tool comfortably handles up to 200 files. For thousands of files, nested folder structures, or in-place renaming, use the FilesDesk desktop app.

Does this rename my original files?

No — browsers can't modify files in place. The tool downloads a ZIP of renamed copies. Your originals are untouched.

Can I undo a rename?

Yes, just adjust the rules — the preview updates live until you click Download ZIP. The originals on your disk are never modified, so there's nothing to undo.

Can I use AI to rename files based on what's inside them?

Not in this free tool — it's pattern-based only. For AI-powered renaming that reads PDF text, photo subjects and invoice numbers, use the FilesDesk desktop app for Mac and Windows. It works offline with local AI or online with managed cloud.

Does the tool support regex?

Yes. The advanced rules accept JavaScript-syntax regex with capture groups ($1, $2, …).

Need to rename thousands of files — by content, not pattern?

FilesDesk reads what's actually inside each file (PDF text, photo subjects, invoice numbers, EXIF, dates) and generates clean, searchable names. Works offline or online on Mac & Windows.
