Why bulk rename files at all?
Filenames are how your future self — and search tools — find anything. A folder of DSC_0001.JPG through DSC_3204.JPG tells you nothing. Renaming them to something descriptive makes them searchable, sortable and shareable.

Spotlight, Windows Search, Google Drive and every cloud sync tool index filenames. Wedding_Sarah_001.jpg finds itself; IMG_4521.jpg doesn't.
Sort order that makes sense
Sequential numbering with zero-padding (001, 002) keeps files in the right order alphabetically. Without padding, 10 sorts before 2.
Cross-platform safety
Spaces, ?, :, * and other special characters break URLs, FTP transfers and Windows paths. Sanitizing removes the trip-wires.
Faster handoff
Photographers, designers, accountants and lawyers all hand work to clients. A folder named Acme-Invoice-2026-04.pdf, Acme-Invoice-2026-05.pdf… looks far more professional than doc1.pdf, doc2.pdf.
